How Xref's work in Autocad
You can attach an Xref to an Autocad drawing by using the Xref manager. This means that when you open a drawing or reload an Xref, that Autocad data is brought in from another drawing. The cause of the Xref not found error is that this data is missing or it's location has changed.
There are many benefits to this process. Several Autocad users can work on a project at the same time. The attcahed data is not added to the original drawing so that it's size is smaller.
How to solve the error
If you have received the drawing from a customer, then you should be aware that important information may be missing from the drawing. You should ask your customer to take one of two actions.
1) Ask them to "etransmit" the drawing to you. This command, which you will find under the file pull down menu, will send you all of the relevant files which you need to view the customer's drawing correctly. Including any attched Xref's.
2) Somtimes Xref's have been set up by someone who has since left the company and the remaining staff are not sure how to handle Xref's. An alternative solution in these circumstances is to ask your customer to "bind" the Xref's using Xref manager. This has the effect of combining the Xref information with the drawing.

This is a service which we normally only provide to those who have attended one of our Autocad training courses. So it's a little experimental in that we have no idea how many emails we might receive. If it's manageable we really would be happy to help.
Our experience with existing customers tells us that there are many aspects of Autocad which continue to confuse users. In the current climate many companies have frozen training budgets which can lead to frustration for Autocad users.
Sorry we can't take questions about customisation. There are various commercial reasons for this.Past experience includes a company where an employee has customised Autocad, but whose prime motivation appeared to have been to make his position indespensible . A situation which left others stuggling to use the Autocad LT when that person departed.
Many email support questions on Autocad LT are answered by reference to new features which have been added over the years. We find many Autocad users still wedded to such outdated concepts as wblock which has largely been replaced by design centre. Although wblock still has it's uses when setting up xrefs.
Advanced or refresher Autocad LT training starts with questions and answers and then goes on to cover many short cuts and tips to improve your drafting speed. Companies can be more competitve when times are good, leaner when times are bad. Typically less stress for Autocad users.
